Thanksgiving Marketing Ideas for your business

The holidays are upon us and with that it is time to ramp up the marketing of retail businesses. For this post I used the assistance of HARO (help a reporter out) and got a good return of ideas. I will explain more about HARO and different ideas on how to use the free service a little later.

1. The first suggestion comes from Leah Dossey who is the owner, art director/ designer for Blue Leaf Creative. She suggests:

Here is what we have done in the past that has actually boosted revenue for December. We create and send out an e-blast to all our clients (we are a service-related business) that is funny. Last year we sent out, “Closed On Account of Pie.” With a great image of pumpkin pie and the dates we would be closed and a message of how we wished them all a wonderful Thanksgiving and then how we looked forward to working with them during the holiday season. Just that small connection, done in a fun and different way put us in front of our existing client base and kept us fresh in their minds. It is amazing what you can do for free, if you just think outside the box and use some creative wisdom.

2. Next we have Karl Schmieder who is one of the founders of MessagingLab in New York. Karl suggests:

I run a small branding and marketing communications company that only sends out Thanksgiving cards to our customers and all the people in our sales funnel. We do not send out Christmas cards because we feel those get lost in the noise around that particular holiday. We have found that whenever we send out the cards, we add one or two new clients or make additional sales. While one-two sales might not sound like a lot, it is for a two-man shop when you consider the average sale is around $5,000. We find this to be a very effective and cost-effective way to use our marketing dollars.

3. Erin Read Ruddick, the client services director at Creating Results, LLC – Strategic Marketing, suggested that I find a video clip from the show WKRP in Cincinnati “Turkeys Away.”

We’ve done multiple fall promotions for clients, including creating a giant corn maze for a real estate developer that drove thousands of leads, but nothing specifically Thanksgiving.

4. Next Benjamin Christie suggested I take a look at his blog www.gourmetads.com.

“Taking advantage of targeted advertising next to online recipes for holiday favorites is a great way to get your brand at the top of every shopper’s grocery list this year. When a consumer goes online to look up recipes on how to roast their Thanksgiving turkey, will they be thinking Butterball, Norbest or Honeysuckle White? That all depends on whose ad is cleverly placed right beside the roast turkey recipe.

More and more consumers are turning to the Internet for their recipe needs; especially their holiday recipe needs and smart advertisers are taking advantage of this trend with their Thanksgiving advertising in order to create brand awareness during the critical holiday sales rush. Ideally, companies should get their products placed four weeks before the big holiday as many shoppers have already begun to stock their pantries in preparation for the big event.”

5. Lastly I figured I would throw out a suggestion of my own called the Turkey Hunt

I would aim for success by getting as much local publicity as possible, including local business sponsors. Then right on or around Thanksgiving Day I would dress 3-4 people up in big turkey costumes and have them run around in a big field. I would charge people a couple bucks for a bucket of water balloons (all proceeds go to a local charity). Next give them all water balloon launchers and let them rip. The first person to hit each turkey with a water balloon wins that turkey’s prize package from the local sponsors.

So we create a fun way to promote sponsoring businesses, free prizes and also donations to charities. Maybe even instead of charging for the water balloons we offer a swap of a balloon or two for a nonperishable food bank item.

How do your promote your blog and what is your goal?

There are a few different schools of thought in regard to blogging. Which do you fall into and why?
Blogging for the sake of blogging

This is where the person has something they are passionate about and just loves sharing that subject with others. People can easily in time become an authority on that subject and generate a huge following.

Blogging for opportunity

This is when a blogger is using his or her blog as a tool for a different means such as name recognition or networking. You might be using your blog as a leveraging device to help you meet your goals either in business, personal or finance.

Blogging for money

There is no shortage of MMO (make money online) blogs and more are created every day. These are the people who want to sell ad space, a product, service or even the blog. Blogging for profit has become a pretty big business and the short cut to that would be to throw money at it and save time, such as buying an existing blog. This also falls under the paid to blog area.

Blogging for branding

This is a way of quality control on information that you or your business release. This is also how to interact with your customers in a direct fashion, giving people the inside scoop on new products or services.

Conclusion

All of these different forms of blogging have different goals in mind. Sure, some of them can overlap and criss-cross each other. But what blog marketing comes down to is knowing why you are doing it and then direct your efforts to achieving that goal.

Personally, I shy away from social sites like Stumbleupon and Digg because that does not help me reach my goal. A flood of traffic will not make me any more money than I am making now and only leads to headaches with my servers. But if you are trying to become an authority on computer games or a bigger make money online blog, then that type of traffic would serve you better.

In the end, it comes to asking the right questions and then mapping out the best route to reach your goal. If your goal is to make $1,000 online, probably one of the slowest ways to do that is to start a blog. Sure it can happen but if you are new to blogging it can take FOREVER. On the flip side of the coin, if you are writing a book as a new author and want to maximize your exposure to potential readers, then starting a blog would be an excellent idea to get that reach out there. Dyson suck, but that’s exactly what they want

Dyson VacuumIt’s no secret that Dyson vacuums do a great job of sucking up all of the grit and grime around the house. They are known for never losing any suction power no matter what. They also do many other things like cleaning the air as it passes through and easy dumping of waste. I am sure in due time they will be automated and have dinner waiting when you arrive home from work. Only if it were soon enough.

What Dyson did is over the top for branding, but it is the combination of branding and an excellent product that leads to success. The creators of the Dyson vacuum went above and beyond creating just a vacuum. They created something that was different in its category. The biggest lesson any of us can take away from the success of the Dyson is to know that in a world of similar products and services, it is still possible to set yourself or your product apart from the rest.

In marketing, it is easy to settle for what pays the bills. But what is your goal really? Is it to be mediocre? I know my goal isn’t to be mediocre but sometimes I don’t even realize I am heading that way until I see myself surrounded by more people just like me. That is the reason I quit my last job. I could feel the walls of mediocrity closing in on me and had to make a break for something better.

The same goes for life as in marketing. The thing that sets those in the top 20% from the majority are the ones who get complacent or who settle for what is working. You ever wonder why there are always a few Realtors in town who sell the majority of the houses? How about the sales person driving the Corvette in a town full of sales people? What about the gas station across the street that gets 40% more business?

I have no doubt that the creators of the Dyson vacuum are going to keep innovating and finding new ways to break the mold of the traditional. I hear they are even creating a new bathroom hand dryer, thank god. The key to marketing and branding is to create something that is different in the world of the same. How can you take what you have and mold it into a product or service that goes above and beyond, to the far right, to the far left, the most color, twisted, unique, useful, creative in your market? I am sure with a little thought and effort it will begin to take shape into something people crave and desire.

How to make the switch to working online Part 1

How to make the switch to working online is going to be a short series on how to move from your 9-5 job to a life of freedom and flexibility of working online. This is how I made my move and how you can too, no BS involved.

First, it isn’t working online but rather playing online and earning money. If I did not love getting up in the morning doing what I am doing, I wouldn’t last a month. The biggest hurdle you have to overcome while pondering the thought of working online is to ignore what others have done to make money online and to do what you love instead.

When people first start out online, they look at the likes of John Chow and Jeremy Schoemaker and think, “I can do this.” What most people realize after about a month of trying is it doesn’t work out that way. Earning money online can be a lot harder than it appears.

First Step:

Start! I know that seems basic, but it is amazing that most people only think and talk about making a life change for the better. So get going and do it! Learn about the different ways you can make money online and what you are capable of doing.

Second Step:

Find what you love to do. Motivation is a huge factor in success. When you love your work, you aren’t working. Having fun is probably the most important aspect of doing what you love. Besides loving what you do, you will often know a lot about that particular niche, adding even more to your credibility and knowledge to the trends in that market. Knowing as much as you can about your niche market gives you the edge on top of the passion to pursuit it. It amazes me that even after blogging for a short period of time you will see so many other bloggers come and go as they slowly give up on their pursuit of money. It’s a pursuit of a dream that will carry you through.

Third Step:

Phase into your online work. I didn’t just wake up one day and start working online. I started by reading blogs. Then I started subscribing to blogs that I liked. I opened up a free blogging account on Blogger.com and other sites, learning the skills of creating a fluid site online. I learned how to and how not to make money online (selling ebooks is not going to get you anywhere unless you know how to market online well). Make the shift from part-time Internet entrepreneur to full-time self employed Internet marketer. Start small and allow yourself to have a life outside of the Internet and your work. As you grow and expand online, you will have to be the judge of when to quit your day job and pursuit your online business. I did this after roughly 4-5 months. I timed vacation and paychecks to give me the most coverage and financial buffer I could. This process wasn’t easy and I had to live on next to nothing for a few months in order to accomplish the transaction. I recommend saving as much money as you can before this part or already be generating a steady income stream from your part-time online ventures. Both are good ideas.

Fourth Step:

Find a balance in your life and establish a routine. It is a whole new world to work for yourself. There is no longer someone making sure you are accomplishing your work. You have to be your own boss. Treat your time as a commodity that you can no longer take back. Time is no longer worth a fixed dollar amount. It is equated in the terms of value added. You now get paid on performance and the value that you provide. It no longer matters how long it takes you to accomplish tasks in order to get paid but rather how much value you provide your customers. Never cheat your customers on value. You may find that in order to generate the income you want, you only spend 4 hours a day working for it. It is important to find that balance and treat that time like it is pure gold, because it is.

Fifth Step:

Diversify. The days where you set up a store front and sold hardware supplies to local people are fading fast. In a world that changes in a matter of minutes online, you cannot afford to be stagnate. As soon as you start generating a decent income from your flagship blog or virtual business, you should be creating the next. When you have 4-5 different but related businesses online, you protect yourself from failure due to lose of income. If one of those businesses or income streams disappears, you still have others to carry your through until your next idea is put into place. The winds of business change so quickly online that no one knows for sure what the next year will bring. If people claim to know, they are lying.

Sixth Step:

Give back. Giving back is a crucial part of business and branding. Giving back doesn’t always have to involve money, it can be in time to help charitable causes, giving advice to others, talking with and answering questions from customers, sending thank you cards and notes and just about anything else. Never forget where you were at one point, and remember to give credit to those who helped get you there.

Making sure your branding truck doesn’t break down

Let me ask you this one question: Have you ever seen a UPS truck broken down on the side of the road or in a junk yard?

I for one have never seen a broken down UPS truck and probably for good reason. As it turns out, UPS and its competition would never want to be branded as the company that can’t deliver on time due to faulty equipment. Besides maintaining all of its vehicles regularly, UPS goes to great lengths to ensure you never see one of its trucks “broken.” If one were to break down on the side of the road for any reason, the cargo is immediately swapped from one truck to another, making sure to get all packages to their destination on time. Shortly there after, the truck is carted away to a mechanic.

If the broken UPS truck is no longer valuable to the company or needs to be destroyed, it is altered. UPS goes through the process of repainting and re-branding the original truck so that by the time it is done, the only similarity is the shape. For this reason, you will never see one in the junk yard. I wonder if UPS makes them look like FedEx before carting them off…ha… anyways.

Each of these companies has a huge image and brand to protect. It is so big and so important that they will go to the lengths or repainting a totaled delivery truck so people will never see that there was something wrong with their brand or that it was unreliable somehow.

Branding is a very important aspect of business. Visitors to your site or business can either promote your brand or they can trash it. When you are about to add that new advertising or start a new marketing campaign, make sure you think about the effects that it could have on your brand. Don’t let your customers see your brand if it breaks.
