Marketing Ideas #14 McDonalds Free Coffee Monday

This is the fourteenth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

McDonalds Free Coffee MondayOn the radio I overhead McDonald’s advertising free coffee Mondays where you can drive through or stop by their store for a free sample of McDonald’s coffee. I for one think this is BRILLIANT! First off, I love coffee and especially FREE coffee. Next, they are getting droves of new people to try their coffee in hopes of converting them to long-time McDonald’s coffee drinkers. Finally, I am sure sales will go through the roof of additional items like breakfast sandwiches and burgers as the people who get their free coffee realize how hungry they are too.

Unlike Starbucks, McDonald’s has more to offer on their menu in addition to coffee like hamburgers and fries. Although McDonald’s isn’t providing as many coffee options or varieties, I am sure the masses of people only drink a few select options to begin with.

My question to you is: are they trying to convert coffee drinkers to the McDonald’s brand, or are they trying to convert non-coffee-drinking McDonald’s patrons into coffee drinkers? I have to imagine it is a bit of both. I have a feeling the profit margins on coffee is high and can be a great addition to the McDonald’s bottom line.

Marketing Ideas #12 Be Creative

This is the twelfth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

Thanks to Dosh Dosh on twitter I found this ad talking about a Nissan Xterra for sale. This is an ad from Craigslist where some guy is trying to sell his Nissan Xterra SUV. In a market where SUV’s and fuel mileage are things to consider he chose to tell a story. I have a feeling that this picture will eventually make its rounds on the Internet bringing his story and ride to fame status online. I have no doubt he will sell it for asking price. Not to mention that he has now gotten more publicity for free than $1,000 worth of ads in the news paper would get. Click on the picture for the full version.

Marketing Ideas #10 Burger King dropping money

This is the tenth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

The other day I came across an article on the SoGoodBlog where Burger King is purposely dropping wallets around different locations loaded with goodies. Most of the contents inside are gift certificates to their restaurant but who knows maybe someone got adventurous and added some real cash. As far as we can tell they are being dropped in and around the Chicago area, but that doesn’t mean it cant happen where you are.

Yep, the wallets include notes telling the individuals who find them to go ahead and keep the wallets. Time Out Chicago reported on November 12th that Burger King planned to drop 5,000 of these wallets around urban hot spots in Chicago. A handful of bloggers have found some of these wallets, and are reporting that they contain actual cash, ranging from a $1 bill to a $100 bill, a gift card to Burger King, a “Drivers License” featuring The King, and a map of Chicago or Orlando area Burger King’s.

Several bloggers have posted about their experience, or their friend’s experience, finding one of these wallets. See HERE, HERE and HERE for more on their stories. A couple of PR and marketing bloggers are weighing in as well, praising the promotion and calling it “unexpected and well-timed” given the current state of the economy.

How to add a Twitter comment field

This is a little off of the Marketing Ideas segment but I wanted to point out that there is now a Twitter field added to the comment portion of my blog. Now when you leave a comment, you can leave your Twitter ID. This may not sound like much to most people, but I assure you when you finally do get involved with Twitter you will appreciate it. When you leave a comment with your Twitter ID it will show up along with your comment so others can follow you on Twitter and hopefully be encouraged to have multiple links pointing to wherever you want them to. Check it out, and enjoy!
