There are two things I love to watch on TV. One is the History Channel and the other is financial news. I don’t have TV to our townhome but I do watch some online on sites like hulu.com and Bloomberg. Bestselling author and now TV star Tim Ferriss is debuting on the History Channel this Thursday night in a pilot Trial By Fire. What this means is, if the show gets a lot of viewers and good ratings they will turn the show into a series.

What I recommend is to check the show out. It is based on the notion that Tim Ferriss has to learn an extremely hard or complicated skill set in the smallest time frame possible. Here is a video teaser and quote from Tim’s site:

The concept is simple: I have one week to attempt to learn what is usually learned over 5-20 years. I either crash and burn — or survive by the skin of my teeth — in a final test (trial by fire) each time.

If it’s made into a series, which depends entirely on viewership numbers on Thursday night, I’ll deconstruct a new complex skill each week. It will show you exactly how I approach learning, and no fake TV drama will be required to make the stakes real.

This episode was shot in HD in Tokyo and the mountains of Nikko, where I rolled the dice on Japanese horseback archery, or yabusame: full gallop, no hands, no safety gear, with wooden poles lining the track on either side of the horse. Please don’t do this at home. I had access to the best in the world, and you’ll get to see some never-before-seen footage of a rare and brutal samurai sport few non-Japanese have ever attempted.

I for one would think that this series would be a fun and interesting one to watch. If you are a fan of Tim Ferriss and would like to help promote his quest to be the next History Channel star I would highly recommend re-posting and sharing this with others.

Most of you know that I am a pretty big fan of Tim’s and have offered his book as prizes for contests and taken his advice to heart about contacting a famous person. I believe he is a leader in life-hacking and would also recommend his book to anyone.

Marketing Ideas #16 Different Sales for Christmas Shoppers

This is the seventeenth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

I found this article from Commercial-News.com where they talk about having two different shopping nights for men and women. It is a pretty creative and interesting idea that caters to both men’s and women’s shopping habits. Not sure how many mall owners read this blog but I do know that the idea of catering to men’s and women’s different shopping patterns is a pretty good idea. How can you change the sales and deals you offer to better match the patrons frequenting your business?

The largely known difference in men’s and women’s shopping habits, with women often shopping early and men often waiting until the last minute to shop, was seen with a promotion that started with a Girl’s Night Out last week and will conclude with a Guy’s Night out on Dec. 16.

Mall administrative assistant Cindy Compton explained that women who participated filled out their own gift registry or wish list of items from mall stores.

The lists then will be made available to their guys on Guy’s Night Out. There also are sales, door prizes and free gift wrap on the Guy’s Night Out.

Marketing Ideas #14 McDonalds Free Coffee Monday

This is the fourteenth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

McDonalds Free Coffee MondayOn the radio I overhead McDonald’s advertising free coffee Mondays where you can drive through or stop by their store for a free sample of McDonald’s coffee. I for one think this is BRILLIANT! First off, I love coffee and especially FREE coffee. Next, they are getting droves of new people to try their coffee in hopes of converting them to long-time McDonald’s coffee drinkers. Finally, I am sure sales will go through the roof of additional items like breakfast sandwiches and burgers as the people who get their free coffee realize how hungry they are too.

Unlike Starbucks, McDonald’s has more to offer on their menu in addition to coffee like hamburgers and fries. Although McDonald’s isn’t providing as many coffee options or varieties, I am sure the masses of people only drink a few select options to begin with.

My question to you is: are they trying to convert coffee drinkers to the McDonald’s brand, or are they trying to convert non-coffee-drinking McDonald’s patrons into coffee drinkers? I have to imagine it is a bit of both. I have a feeling the profit margins on coffee is high and can be a great addition to the McDonald’s bottom line.

Marketing Ideas #13 Black Friday Sale

This is the thirteenth day of a 30-day trial. Follow the link to Marketing Ideas En Masse to find out more.

It’s not so much that a bunch of stores are having a big sale before the holidays but rather the name that accompanies the sale. Black Friday Sale, where did that even come from to begin with? Let’s take a great holiday time and cover it with the sale to end all sales. It is like more people talk about Black Friday than Thanksgiving. When did a one-day sale become some popular, other than Valentine’s Day? Talk about marketing at its finest.

We now celebrate more holidays in retail stores than we do with our family. I can just imagine way back when people lovingly gave a few handmade or long saved for gifts to one another, that that tradition would become the bonanza it has become today. I hope that I as well as others can recognize the true meaning of all of this holiday time and be truly thankful for the things we are blessed with. I hope that all of us take the time to really reflect on the things we are thankful for and spend quality time with our friends and family. Here are a couple of videos to get you ready for Black Friday.
