The last couple of days I have seen a huge flux of spam comments to our network, including a lot that are making it through. I am pretty sure I resolved the issues for the time being but still set all comments to be manually approved until I know for sure the spam won’t get through. What steps have you taken to prevent spam on your site? What programs or software do you use to block spam other than Akismet?

I only use askimet but recently lately like you spam has been getting thru, so I am curious to see what other plugins are out there to protect against spam. I have seen some captcha ones but I really don't want to go that route if I don't have to.

One person's spam is another person's content, in some cases. For each blog owner it is different and it is a personal choice, depending on the purpose of the blog. Personally, if I see someone commenting in order to create an anchored link to their blog, a blog that is of general interest, I see no problem in approving the comment as long as the comment adds value to my blog. The comment should be long enough to have ample detail related to the post. The comment should definitely show that the commentor (is that a word yet?) has read and understood and thought about the post message.
On a blog where I allow commenting, I usually use bad neighborhood plugin.

Same here. Last two days one of my blog was bombarded with tonnes of spam comment (abfdgjds kind of comment) and it managed to go through akismet. I always turn on the moderation mode, so I throw all of those spam comment manually to the spam folder.

I think spam will always continue to find a way through so the battle will never be over.
@Greg – well done
@Wiehanne, I was getting the extact same spam with those stupid aldfkadf combos.
Spam has been really bad for me too lately. Having multiple blogs (I think I'm up to 10 now?) I have the unique luxury of seeing comments that seem to be genuine, but then after seeing the identical comment by the identical person on 3-4 different blogs I know it is spam.
Others do not even have links, just nonsense letters…
I sadly turned my nofollow free to like 15 comments because of so many people who were just clearly abusing it & linking to what I consider "bad sites".
I have a lot of words in askimet too that need to be moderated before being approved – casino, handbag, and many more.

I have been sticking to good ole manual approval. As my sites grow, I may have to add Askimet or something similar; but for now what I'm doing is fine.
