Blog Action Day is an annual nonprofit event that aims to unite the world’s bloggers, podcasters and videocasters, to post about the same issue on the same day. Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion. Today we talk about poverty.

This year is set to be the worst in a long time for food banks and shelters across the country. A fine line separates most of the haves and haves-nots. I would like to encourage anyone willing and able to donate something.
Time
Spend a little time helping a neighbor or friend who is less fortunate. Donate an afternoon or morning at a food shelter or food bank. Not everyone has time, which leads me to money.
Money
Give what you can. I am sure there is no shortage of places seeking gifts during the winter months. If you really don’t know where you can give start with your local Salvation Army, Good Will or homeless shelter.
Influence
So many times a lot can be accomplished in a short time just by asking the right people. People in general are willing and compassionate but sometimes just need a little spark to get motivated. Be that spark.
I don’t think there is a good enough excuse to see your way out of donating something, be it time, money or influence. I would like to encourage you to do what you can to help those who need a hand.
I look forward to making a difference but sometimes I need a kick in the pants to focus. Use this opportunity to make a difference.

I always support local charities and food banks when I can in my community. They usually need the most support in the new year when shelves run dry after chirstmas.

What's the phrase? Give someone a fish, they eat for 1 day. Teach them how to fish and they will eat forever…though sadly some people you can teach them to fish and they will never learn or change their ways…

@Chelle, That's true, but sometimes people need fish while they learn. I remember having to use some of these services when I was a small kid, that then enabled us to eat while learning a new profession. I think the two should go very hand in hand.

I love the idea of Blog Action day. I heard about it for the first time a few days ago, and absolutely want to get involved. There are so many great causes to lend a hand to. I'm glad the blogging community is actively supporting great causes.
