For those that don’t know what PWNED is, here is the definition courtesy of Wikipedia:
It is the political season and things are heating up everywhere. For the bulk of my readers, it is probably unknown that I graduated with a BS in Political Science, BS seems so fitting. Regardless, this time of season when the gloves come off and candidates at every level start taking swings at each other, I can’t help but laugh.
For the record, I support neither John McCain or Barack Obama and don’t feel any real change will occur under either of their administrations. Without digressing too much, I can’t help but tie in political shenanigans with marketing. After all, these people are trying to mold your perception to further their cause. I can only hope that you vote by their actions and not by what they say.
Then I came across the Keating Ecomics sponsored by the Barack Obama campaign. It is a cleverly put together site that includes a documentary type video basically pointing out that John McCain doesn’t know economics and is a dirt bag.
I think this whole site, video and information was extremely well put together and orchestrated with excellent marketing strategy. Not to mention is less than 24 hours since launch, the video is fastly approaching 1,000,000 views on YouTube. They went to great lengths to ensure the proper message was delivered in order to shape your opinion of John McCain.
I don’t think this will be shaping the masses of Baby Boomers but for the generation of Internet Dwellers this video can sure gain some legs. Well-executed videos and messages at just the right time tend to go viral and spread like wildfire.
I think this video does two things at once:
- It points fault in the other candidate to sway voters
- Donations buttons EVERYWHERE!
I have no doubt that the campaign spent a lot of time, money and energy to see the success of this video and making sure it goes viral. I believe it already has and will only gain steam the more people talk about it. It will be interesting to see how the McCain camp responds. I truly believe this election will be decided by the college-aged voters (if they come out to vote).
What are your thoughts about this video and the upcoming elections?

If given a chance I’ll go for Barack too
I think the tide is turning in this election.

With the internet era like now, I think viral video is a good way to approach the youngster.
The short bit that I watched the debate, it seemed to me that Obama never actually answered the majority of the questions that he was asked. I was engaged in his answers but then I remembered what the question was and didn’t hear an answer.
And I think that PWNED originated in a video game called Warcraft where the developers actually made a typo in the “BigPappa got pwned” statement on screen. It was supposed to say “Owned.”

There’s a good chance I won’t vote at all, as sad as that is…either way I think we’re screwed…
What really makes me sick is how many millions of dollars are wasted on all of this campaigning and tv commercials and mailers and a bunch of other crap… I bet I could do a more effective campaign for less than $100,000

there’s always pros and cons on video. I think individual have to think of it themselves.

@Big Pappa: This originated in an online game called Warcraft, where a map designer misspelled “owned.” When the computer beat a player, it was supposed to say, so-and-so “has been owned.”
@BM is that so? I don’t know at all.

I myself am an Obama supporter so I am biased on this somewhat. But I believe Obama has ran one of the best campaigns in presidential history. He has put together a great team on every angle especially with new media and the internet. McCain’s campaign is essentially non-existent on the internet which I think has really hurt their message and fund-raising.

@Country Music, I think the flip side of the coin is who is reaching the voting class more effectively? Yes Obama is winning on the Internet but traditionally the Internet aged people don’t vote. More importantly if they seeing that they “are winning” then there is less incentive to go out and vote. I don’t mean this as support for McCain but it does make you stop and think “who is really winning.”

“Internet aged people don’t vote” - if there is possibility to vote online, maybe they’ll do that.
