I had this experience with Herman Wouk. I needed to contact him about accessing closed portions of his archives. He sent back my initial note with a friendly scribbled note — I think it's just easier for him to reply that way. When I actually requested access to the archives I received a reply (no) from his agent. I think I should have probably cooresponded a few more times before I made the request…

Thanks for sharing this with us. I am an artist (abstract painter) and because of Tim's book I have sent out about 400 postcards to various celebrities as an invitation to view my website. My goal is to sell a painting to a celebrity. The postcards went out Sept-Oct time frame and I'm still waiting for a that sale!

Only thing, I have contacted the rich and famous before. One of the most notable, Vicki Kennedy, (Senator Ted Kennedy's wife and their dog.) Now seeing what you did, I need to raise the bar.

This is an outstanding idea, and I love that you had proven what I thought all along. Given the right circumstances and making it as easy as possible for them to reply you in fact did get a reply. This has inspired me to do the same with my own list of "famous" people.
