I can already tell that an American recession wont hold back for this movie.
The Dark Knight is debuting tonight at midnight for anybody that is interested in watching it (good luck). Our town and many like it throughout the US are showing the movie at 12:00 a.m. to a Batman crazy crowd. The movies showing tonight in fact sold out as early as two weeks ago for the first showing.
What on earth did the marketing team for the star-studded Dark Knight do in order to stir up such a craze? The first thing they had going for them are the leading actors all of who I enjoy greatly myself. Here is the cast rundown: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger (recently deceased), Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman. This cast is nothing to laugh at, seeing all of them have starred in major movies before, including Academy Award winners. This is the last film Heath Leder will star in, and I can’t help but wonder how that added to the anticipation. Some critics have proudly proclaimed that this film will be Ledger’s best film, even going as far to suggest Oscar territory. I personally can’t wait to see The Dark Knight very soon.
As the newest film in the series begins to roll in front of everyone, ask yourself, how did the producers attract the attention of so many? I am willing to guess they gave you something to talk about. This film will live on and be hailed as a masterpiece by many, as well as the greatest role Heath Ledger ever played. Do you know why? Because it is…

I am excited about this movie too. Will be looking forward to seeing this movie either tonight or over the weekend.

I think the recent passing of Heath Ledger did quite a bit of marketing and the film producers didn't have to pay a dime. The media was talking about this film back in April or May (I can't remember when) right when he passed. The anticipation of seeing Heath in his last film caused quite a bit of buzz.

Yeah I agree that there was a lot of media hype due to Heaths passing. As unfortunate as it is could he be the next John Belushi with his untimely passing?
Great post on the Dark Knight. I am going this weekend to watch it and I am sure it will be a hit.

I agree with the first two comments…I think the passing of Ledger had a huge role in the "hype." After his passing there were many stories stating that he had commented this was one of the darkest roles he'd ever taken. Add to that the fact that big name actors volunteered to step into his character after his passing so Ledger's final role would be released.
Now we can only hope that the hype lives up to the hype, which in my opinion it seldom does.

@Frank I cant wait to watch it this weekend as well.
@ghing Dido
@lala I really do hope that everything plays out the way everyone has predicted. If if does I could easily see this being Heath's biggest role.
Heath Ledger is Legend!
I can't express how sorry I am that he is no longer with us.
Can't wait to see this movie when it comes to South Africa.

@Richard I agree about the legend, I hope the movie debuts in South Africa, I should ask you about the 2010 World Cup
I just got back from watching this movie and I think it was pretty good. I'm not sure where and when other actors played the Joker, but Ledger did an excellent job! The movie was a good sequel and the next one will probably get and be worth all the hype it will get. The only real question I have is why Katie Holmes didn't play her role from the first movie.

Great film! Rather long… especially for us who went into the theatre with LARGE drinks.
Dwacons last blog post..That's with a "B"
@Dwacon I could only imagine you had to miss some of the best parts in order to hit up the little boys room during the movie. ha.
I had to go to the bathroom sooooo bad but i would of rather risked pissing my pants then to leave that theatre!!!
I hope there was nothing at the end of the credits
I can't wait to see the movie but I want to go see it in IMAX and it's sold out around me for the next few days. I saw an article earlier today that said the movie opened at 12a in over 3,000 theaters posting $18.5 million in revenue. With that much in revenue it broke the record for a midnight opening.
I might not be able to wait to see it on IMAX….I guess I can always go twice

@Justin I want to go see it in IMAX as well. However, the IMAX theater here is in the Mall of Georgia (largest mall in the Southeast) and it is sold out for over a week. : (
I don't get caught up in all the hype of movie debuts so I think I can wait a week or so.
@Blue I think iMax would be really awesome I would see it again for sure at one of those.
I just watch it the last day of opening weekend contributing our $12 to the record setting numbers. I still cant believe I didnt hear any spoilers prior to going.
I can't wait to go see it. I'm taking my nephew Wednesday.

It's wasn't so much Heath's death as it was the Alternate Reality Game. Google it. Astounding marketing that was mocked when it started but turned fans from raving mad into foaming-at-the-mouth loyal.
TDK was an excellent film. So much effort went into the film, and the viral marketing campaign lasted well over 2 years.

This is James Gilks (owner of SerialKillerCalendar.com) personally I would love it if they took the idea of the Riddler to a very dark extreme. His character is very close to real life serial killers like David Berkowitz (the son of sam) and the Zodiac Killer. Many serial killers (including Jack The Ripper and The Red Spider) have sent letters to the police and the Zodiac killer sent cryptograms (which where in essence a type of riddle). I think that if Hollywood is willing to take these films to the gritty dark side of real life, they should focus more on this angel and abandon the tacky jump suit wearing, cartoon aspect that Jim Carey brought to the screen. I would love to see a down right evil and twisted serial killer side to the Riddler.
I also believe that they are setting up The Mad Hatter for a future movie. If you watch carefully, Batman says that the man Dent is interrogating in The Dark Knight (the creepy smiling guy from the ambulance) is named "Jervis Tetch". This is The Mad Hatter.
Lastly, I would love to see all these films come together in to a plot that involves Arkham Asylum. There have been many amazing graphic novels that focus on this (especially "A Serious Place on Serious Earth"). This would be a perfect opportunity for the writers to place Batman against not only a huge cast of badies but also against his own troubled mind.)
Well, thats just the opinion of someone who runs a company devoted to selling serial killer merchandise so you can take it or leave it. I hope you can all stop by SerialKillerCalendar.com to pick up some morbid merch (including the new Serial Killer Magazine, Serial Killer Trading Cards and Serial Killer Action Figures. I know, its a shameless display of self promotion but really, I have to justify reading up on Batman Movies while I am supposed to be working somehow.
