The meaning you provide will separate you from your competition. The blogs and businesses that are the most successful are the ones that have a meaning. I am talking about those who set forth to provide a product or service because of the need, not the money.
Of course, if the venture is not able to become profitable in any way, then the product or service will be discontinued. The failure of the Ford Edsel is probably one of the most notable in history. Labeled as “the wrong car at the wrong time,” Ford pulled the project after losing $350 million (roughly $2 billion today). In order to advert the Edsel effect, you much provide meaning for you and your business.
The first way to provide meaning is to increase the quality of life for people. You see a need and meet that need for the better. Lets say you invent a way for me to safely remove a pen stain from my coat pocket. You would increase the quality of my life because I can continue to wear my favorite coat without a blemish. Seriously, let me know if you figure out how to do that, I can find a use for it.
The second way to provide meaning is to fix something that is wrong. If you believe deep down inside that something is wrong and you set out to correct it, you would be providing meaning. In 1990, U.S. canneries declared they would no longer purchase tuna if it were caught along with dolphins. They were righting the wrong, and the consumers responded favorably.
The last way to provide meaning is to prevent the end of something good. Can anybody say 45s? For those who are to young (I would consider myself in this category), 45s are also known as record players. I do believe that if properly done, a record store could still exist in today’s world and flourish. I do not believe that an 8-track or cassette store would have the same success. Devoted music fans will still purchase and listen to albums on record and swear by their superior sound.
The meaning you provide separates you from your competition. If you have your eyes set on providing something of value, your competition will continually fall behind. Remind yourself of this the next time
someone steals your post and surrounds it by Google ads. When you start by chasing dollars euros you will attract the wrong people and the wrong business. What is the meaning you provide? How does this separate you from the pack?
